Parkinson's Disease Treatments
The effects of Parkinson’s disease can be physically and emotionally hard on those who suffer from the disease and those who care for them. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the average age of onset is around 60, and the chances of being diagnosed increase with age. And, while the cause of the disease has not been proven it does tend to be more prevalent in men than women.
But there is hope. If diagnosed early, rehabilitative treatment and therapy can reduce the side effects, helping the patient lead an active lifestyle. The goal of our hospital’s Parkinson’s rehabilitation program is to give patients a chance to achieve maximum independence.
We offer Lee Silverman Voice Training (LSVT®) BIG, developed by LSVT Global, Inc., as one of our versatile Parkinson's treatments. This program is an intensive physical and occupational therapy exercise program targeting whole-body functional movements.
LSVT BIG helps patients learn how to avoid inactivity and keep movements alive from day to day. It adheres to the principles of practice in exercise, promoting strength and motor learning. Through consistent training with one of our LSVT BIG certified physical or occupational therapists, patients can experience the following improvements:
- Faster walking with bigger steps
- Better balance
- Increased trunk rotation
- Improved confidence
- Restored hope
- 16 individual therapy sessions
- Four times a week for four weeks
- One hour a day
- Regular tune-ups are recommended every three months to maintain motivation, adherence to home programs and increased community participation.
Approximately 89% of people with Parkinson's disease have problems with speech at some point, starting early in the disease process and progressively diminishing quality of life. Common speech problems include:
- Horse voice
- Monotone speech
- Mumbled speech
- Soft voice
Medicine and neurosurgery may dramatically improve other symptoms of Parkinson's, but they typically don't help speech disorders. The most effective way to improve speech is through speech therapy. This includes using LSVT® LOUD, proven to be effective with 15 years of research by the National Institute of Health.
During the LSVT LOUD, patients seek therapy through the following schedule:
- One month
- One hour per day
- Four days per week
Documented improvement with therapy
